Virgo Sugar Scrub

Happy Virgo season! Creating a sugar scrub for this zodiac sign was a little bit of a challenge, since I prefer to work with plants in their natural state. While looking through The Hearth Witch’s Compendium: Magical and Natural Living for Every Day by Anna Franklin to see which plants corresponded to the sign of Virgo, three stood out to me: Almond, Lavender, and Mace.

This is in large part because these ingredients are relatively easy to find. For the Almonds, I used Almond Flour. This doesn’t have the same scent as Almond Oil or Almond Extract, but in this case I was going for the property of Almond, not just the smell. Almond Flour is also a great addition to a sugar scrub because it’s an exfoliant.

Dried Lavender is probably one of the easiest dried herbs to procure, and it has many magical components to it, such as healing, peace, and relaxation. Mace is an herb my family has added to pumpkin pie for as long as I can remember, and it’s usually easy to find in the spice section at any grocery store.

Combined, the Mace and Lavender give this scrub a bit of a citrus-y smell, and after this scrub has been stored for a few hours it begins to smell like sugar cookies.

Virgo Sugar Scrub Recipe

3/4 cup Sugar

1/4 cup Almond Flour

1 tbsp Lavender

1/2 tsp Mace

1/4 cup Coconut Oil, melted

Combine the sugar and almond flour first, using a fork or spoon to break up any small clumps. Chop or grind the Lavender until it’s either a fine powder or in small pieces.

My spice grinder doesn’t have much of an affect on an ingredient that small, so I’ve had to get a little creative. Here’s what works best for me: Sprinkle the dried Lavender onto a cutting board, and roll with a rolling pin. Crush the individual pieces if you can, then chop finely with a kitchen knife.

Add the Lavender and Mace to the Almond Flour-Sugar mixture, and smell the combination. Keep in mind that once the sugar scrub sits in an airtight container, the smell intensifies. But if you want more Lavender or Mace, this is a good time to add it.

Then pour in the melted coconut oil and stir to combine all of the ingredients. Do a patch test on yourself before using it—I do this on my forearm. Make sure you don’t have a reaction to it before you continue using the scrub. Store in an airtight container (I use leftover Talenti ice cream containers—they’re perfect).
