Happy Halloween! The pagan Western Europeans referred to this day as Samhain (pronounced sow-wen). You can learn more about Samhain here, but this celebration marks the midway point between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice. It’s a time when there is some fear about the spirits that walk the earth, but it’s also a chance to communicate with and honor our ancestors.
The Celts believed a new day began at sunset, and so they believed this time of year was the start to a new year, giving Samhain the nickname The Witch’s New Year. It takes place during the astrological season of Scorpio, which is represented by the Death card in the tarot, symbolizing transformation and rebirth.
